How to Optimize Web Pages for Better Ratings

Search Engines utilize different criteria for obtaining results. It is in your site's best interest to learn the different methods. The following should be implimented to become "search engine friendly":

Title Tag

<title> ENTER KEYWORDS HERE IN SENTENCE FORM </title>.

  • Title Tag should included up to 150 characters of text.
  • This tag can be used by the engines to place your site's title in their databases. Keep that in mind when creating the text for this tag.
  • Use the most important keyword first and last word position.
  • Placing different titles on each page in the site and having one or two of your top keywords as one of the first three words in the tag can aid in better results.

Meta tags for Description and Keywords

<meta name="Description" content="ENTER KEYWORDS HERE IN SENTENCE FORM">. and
<meta name="Keywords" content="ENTER KEYWORDS HERE IN LIST FORMAT">.

  • Description should include up to 250 characters of text. The keywords should include up to 1024 characters of text.
  • Descriptions can be used by the engines to place your site's description in their databases. Keep that in mind when creating the text for this tag.
  • I recommend writing approximately 2 to 3 separate sentences mixing up the text formating. Example: Search Engine Optimization - this guide will help you improve your site's visibility, placement on search engines. Increase your search engine rankings today.
  • Keywords can be separated by a simple space or by a comma. There's been an ongoing debate as to which is better for years. I simply use a space to save on the character count. Either format is fine though. Example: Space delimited - "internet marketing promotion online" Comma delimited - "internet, marketing, promotion, online"
  • Make sure to use all your keywords in the keyword meta tag. Use all formats and possible misspellings of words. Example: grey gray internet marketing online web Grey Gray Internet Marketing Online Web GRAY GREY INTERNET MARKETING ONLINE WEB.
  • Keep identical words separated by seven words or more.

Comment Tags

<!-- ENTER KEYWORDS HERE -->

  • These are tags that are used by webmasters and developers for location and layout markers. Turns out a few search engines have included comment tags in their algorithm.

Alternative ("Alt") tags

< IMG WIDTH=490 HEIGHT=90 SRC="ban_490marketing.gif" ALT="Free guide to internet marketing with tips & techniques on successful online promotion"> **

  • The "Alt" tag is mainly used for those Internet surfers that surf with their images turned off. They want content only and seek a faster download.
  • Use your keywords in the image "Alt" tags, Excite is among the few that indexes this tag in their search result.

Percentage of Keywords in Body

  • The more your keywords show up within the text of your pages, the better your chances of optimizing your site's visibility.
  • DO NOT, however, repeat your words over and over. That is known as 'Spamdexing" and it is likely to get your site kicked out of the search engines' databases.

Text Links

Search Engines

  • Use your keywords as text links navigating within your site.

Web Sites using Frames

  • If you are using frames, you have probably heard it is difficult to get high visibility on Search Engines. This is not completely true. Use <NOFRAMES> 'No Frame' Tags</NOFRAMES>. Put your main keywords between the tags. Since most browsers are able to view frames, most of your visitors won't see this. Using complete sentences, will offer a professional look for the few that are still using older browsers.
